We want Europe to have more software of its own: built here, hosted here, answerable to European law, and good enough that choosing it is the easy decision rather than the principled one. CoreOffice is our contribution to that.

Today most of the tools your company runs on were built somewhere else and answer to somebody else's law. That is usually fine, right up until it isn't. A price changes. A feature you built a process around is retired. A request for your data arrives from a court on another continent. None of it costs the vendor anything, because leaving was never really an option — and picking an "EU region" in someone's console moves the disks, not the law.

So we are building the alternative: a full work suite, made and hosted in Europe, cheap enough for a thirty-person company and open enough that a cautious one can run it on its own server. European technological sovereignty is not a slogan for us. It is the reason the product is shaped the way it is — and every team that picks a European tool makes the next one easier to build.

What that means in practice

What we won't pretend

None of this is sovereign all the way down. The processors, the operating systems, the browsers, the cables and the strongest AI models are not European, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. What we get to decide is the layer we build: whose law governs it, who can read it, and how fast you can take it elsewhere. Where we depend on something foreign, we keep it replaceable.

The same goes for encryption. Direct messages, group chats and channels are encrypted in your browser, and one-to-one messages are forward secret. Files in CoreFiles are encrypted with a separate key for every file, and the service opens one only to show or edit it for someone who has access, because that is what editing documents online requires. And this isn't protectionism. Use whatever is best at what it does. Just keep an alternative that actually works, so that staying somewhere is a choice rather than a condition.
